Al Kaline & Lou Brock Personal Items & Collections Compete for Collector Interest

The death of a sports legend in the modern era often results in prized and personal possessions coming up for auction. Personal property or items of both Lou Brock and Al Kaline were sold by Heritage Auctions in November of 2021. There were some high sales for both athletes, but Al Kaline’s extensive collection looks to have been far more enticing than Lou Brock’s prized items.

Detroit’s Tigers great Al Kaline died in April of 2020 at the age of 85 and St. Louis hero Lou Brock died in September of 2020 at the age of 81. Brock was best known for his monumental 938 stolen bases along with 3,023 hits, while Kaline was known for his 3,007 hits. Both players were cherished by their fans.

Collectors Dashboard evaluates high-end collectibles as an alternative asset class. This means collectibles are attracting the same capital that could have been invested into stocks or bonds. Many collectibles now cost thousands of dollars (or much more). Collectors with a passion to own a collectible for years frequently have to compete directly against investors whose only desire is to make a profit in the future.

When items cot tens of thousands of dollars, that’s definitely investment capital. Al Kaline has one of the most important rookie cards of the early 1950s and Lou Brock has one of the most important rookie cards of the 1960s.

There were some items including signatures, rings, game-used items and other personal items that Heritage Auctions sold off. Kaline’s sports collection looked to be much larger in comparison and his items have been featured first since they commanded the highest prices. Brock’s items had been highlighted in detail.

Lou Brock’s very personal 1985 Hall of Fame induction ring was the high sale between the two players at $132,000.00. Al Kaline’s game used glove was comparative at $126,000.00 and his items looked to have much higher sales throughout the list of sold items.
