Analyzing the Key Wonder Woman Comic Books of the Golden Age

Wonder Woman is a timeless comic book character that has earned her place among the top superhero characters in the comic book world. Three separate issues introduce and immortalize this character, forever sealing her strong and enviable position in the Golden Age of comics. The more recent movie releases featuring Gal Gadot and the 1970s television show with Lynda Carter have also kept interest strong over the decades.

Collectors Dashboard evaluates collectibles as an alternative class that competes directly against stocks, bonds and real estate for the same investment dollars. It has become undeniable that collectors and hobbyists with deep passion and interest are having to compete directly against investors looking to make a profit on the exact same assets. This has solidified the interest in fine art, comic books, rare coins, stamps, sports cards.

All Star Comics #8 from October 21, 1941 is the official debut of Wonder Woman. One month later in Sensation Comic #1 is her first cover appearance for the January 1942 issue (the January issue being on stands in December). Wonder Woman reached collectible comic milestones all before America entered WWII on December 7, 1941. The first issue of Wonder Woman’s own comic was June 1942.

Arriving in June 1942 we have Wonder Woman #1. In the six months since her first cover appearance the heroine is seen riding into danger on a white horse. Her truth lasso in full swing above her head in pursuit of justice. Her comic’s first cover issue value unquestioned. There are 179 CGC graded examples with the highest grade CGC 9.0 with 5 examples and the highest population CGC 3.0 with 17 examples. The highest prices realized have been unrestored examples with a CGC 9.0 selling for a record $291,100.00 in December 2016.

Smaller populations surviving from the Golden Age of comics tends to make every sale of interest. Comics without covers and only graded in CGC 0.5 at the lower end of the grading spectrum also seem to be lifted up by the top sales of each issue that realizes a new high sale.

As Gal Gadot stars in more movies as Wonder Woman, it would seem to be a safe assumption that original comic books for the character will remain in high demand by investors and collectors alike.
