Captain America #1 Could Break the $2 Million Price Barrier

Captain America is not generally considered to be the super-hero associated with $1 million-plus modern era blockbuster comic sales. The comic book industry is off to a blockbuster start in 2022 and records are made to be broken. A Captain America #1 comic book was already above the $1 million mark on March 20, 2022 — and now the comic book is challenging the $2 million barrier.

Heritage Auctions has its April 7 to April 10 (2022) Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction. The number-one item by price is currently the Captain America Comics #1 San Francisco Pedigree (Timely, 1941). The grade is a sharp CGC NM 9.4 that is labeled as having Off-white to white pages and the current price of $1,525,000.00 really translates after the buyer’s premium to $1,830,000.00 after 35 bids.

This appears to be a world record for a Captain America auction. This same exact CGC certification number (2041248001) was sold in a Heritage Auction event back on August 1, 2019 for $915,000 at that time. Heritage’s other highest Captain America Comics #1 sale was for a CGC VF+ 8.5 grade with off-white pages at a final price of $384,000 back on January 14, 2021.

Heritage listed an Overstreet 2021 NM- 9.2 value of close to $600,000 in our prior detailed description. The CGC census as of February 2022 showed that there are just two examples in a 9.4 grade, and only one example with a higher grade.
