Coin Collectors Chase: Queen Elizabeth Platinum Jubilee (70 Years of Rule)

In the United States a president lasts four years, eight years if re-elected for a second term. Following the completed term(s) a president will exist in the public eye until death. Her Majesty The Queen is the first British monarch to reach a Platinum Jubilee. The Jubilee marks 70 years on the throne. The Royal Mint has struck every UK coin during the Queen’s reign and they are making the once in a lifetime event an opportunity for coin collectors.

Collectors Dashboard evaluates high-end collectibles as an alternative asset class. The same capital that could have been invested into stocks or bonds is being used to buy high-end collectibles. True coin collectors and hobbyists have a passion to own certain limited edition releases for quite a long time. The investor class in collectibles is solely buying an asset to sell at a later date for a profit.

Included to the collector is the UK 50p coin which is the first 50 Pound coin to mark a royal event. The coin features bold graphic design by award-winning design agency Osborne Ross.

A Cupro-Nickel UK 50p version will be available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition direct from www.royalmint.com for the modest price of 7 British Pounds Sterling.

Here are some of the celebratory coins that would have more interest to the collector and where noted some are Limited Edition:

  • Silver-Proof Limited Edition version of the coin minted 925 sterling silver and limited to 5,000 coins struck. The price is 57.50 British Pounds Sterling each.

According to the Royal Mint Press Release:

“The collection also includes historic coin sets and a limited number of Celebration Sovereigns struck on 6 February 2022. In a rare departure from the St George and the dragon design, these Sovereigns will bear a Royal Arms design by the heraldic artist Timothy Noad.”

The sets include the following arrangements:

  • Her Majesty The Queen’s Jubilee Half-Sovereign Set Limited Edition 499. The price is 1,150 British Pounds Sterling each.
  • The set features year-dated Bullion Half-Sovereigns for the Queen’s Golden, Diamond and Platinum Jubilee years.
  • Each Half-Sovereign bears a special jubilee reverse design
  • Her Majesty The Queen’s Jubilee Sovereign Set Limited Edition 499. The price is 1,800 British Pounds Sterling each.

As the Limited Editions of these coins sell out directly from the Royal Mint the coins can be found on sites like eBay. The more limited the edition the more of a challenge it will be for the collector to find one. Her Majesty the Queen 1952 and 2022 coinage will exist in circulation for some time. The gold and silver and platinum editions of commemoratives will only become harder to find as time passes.

The Royal Mint’s own description of these coins further said:

As Her Majesty The Queen becomes the first British monarch to reach a Platinum Jubilee, the nation is celebrating this latest milestone in Her Majesty’s record-breaking reign. As the original maker of UK coins, The Royal Mint has struck every UK coin of The Queen’s reign and we are marking this once-in-a-lifetime moment with one of our largest coin collections to date.

John Bergdahl has created a commemorative Platinum Jubilee portrait depicting Her Majesty on horseback and two beautifully decorative reverse designs for the occasion. The collection also includes the first UK 50p coin issued by The Royal Mint to celebrate a royal event, which features a bold, graphical celebration of The Queen’s reign by the design agency Osborne Ross on the reverse. The obverse features the Platinum Jubilee portrait.

Created in collaboration with the royal historian and author Professor Kate Williams, each edition comes with packaging exploring particular elements of Her Majesty’s remarkable life and reign.

The collection also includes historic coin sets and a limited number of Celebration Sovereigns struck on 6 February 2022. In a rare departure from the St George and the dragon design, these Sovereigns will bear a Royal Arms design by the heraldic artist Timothy Noad.
