The future of fractional ownership within collectibles and alternative assets remains in a period of growth and uncertainty alike. Some platforms are easier to use than others, but the first platform of fractional “culture-assets” to merge is the Otis platform’s acquisition by Public.com.

Otis’ investors have seen some bumpy rides before and after the merger process. The liquidity in some of these assets has been low enough that the bid/ask spread requires a seller to input a desired asking price which may or may not be transacted. Some of those assets have such thin volume and liquidity that even 1 or 2 shares or a few shares worth $10.00 or less of the assets generates the following message:

There are not enough bids within a reasonable average price. Sell fewer shares or submit an ask.

While the list of which assets would be kept and which ones would be auctioned off was not public until June 27, 2022. We now have that full list and by some views there is an obvious hurdle here to consider — higher value assets and those with broader appeal are being given an obvious priority over low-value and more narrow appeal. According to Otis’ and Public.com’s announcement:

This list is based on a variety of factors including market cap, ongoing investment case, and expected demand on Public. All other assets will be sold and proceeds distributed pro rata to shareholders. Trading for any of the assets which are slated to be sold in auctions will be paused at the market closing on Friday, July 8 (2022).

The announcement further noted that the current plan is to merge all sneaker assets, excluding game-worn or signed pairs, into a single collection and migrate that collection to the Public.com platform. The announcement also gave a list of the assets which will not be migrating over to the new platform.
