Higher Postage Fees and Collectibles Sales

If there is one thing buyers in online collectibles transactions love to complain about that has nothing to do with an item (you know who you are!), shipping costs are one of the thorns that continually get brought up. After all, spending time packing up a package to send, paying for the boxes, considering gas, and waiting in line at the postal office or shipping center is time that cannot have any value! At least that is how some buyers act (again, you know who you are!).

Well sports collectibles fans and other fans of larger collectibles better get ready for higher shipping costs on the larger collectibles that get shipped around the nation.

April 3, 2022 is the date that some higher postal fees will take place. While most First Class costs will not be impacted for regular cards and the like, this is the sort of issue that can drive up the costs of sending card sets, bats, equipment, musical instruments and a whole host of other collectibles which are large in size.

For April of 2022, the USPS will charge a $1.50 fee for packages that are greater than one cubic foot OR for packages which have a box length of greater than 22 inches — if the customer did not provide dimensions or provided inaccurate dimensions inside an online postage provider. This will apply to Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail and Parcel Select Ground.

Also starting in April of 2022, there will be a new “nonstandard fee” for packages that require manual sorting by the USPS when the dimensions of the package exceed sortation requirements. The rates will be adjusted based on the actual box dimensions. Packages with which have a length over 22 inches will have a $4.00 surcharge and those over 30 inches will have $15.00 surcharge. Packages which are larger than 2 cubic feet will have a $15.00 surcharge. This will apply to Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail and Parcel Select Ground.

eBay has broken out the new schedule in bullet formats and noted that a maximum of two non-standard fees may be assessed for a package:

  • Packages that exceed 22 inches but are not greater than 30 inches in length: Add $4.00 per package
  • Packages that exceed 30 inches in length: Add $15.00 per package
  • Packages that exceed 2 cubic feet (3,456 cubic inches): Add $15.00 per package

But, hey think of the good news. Now sellers can prepare for a new wave of complaints from buyers who think there should be no shipping costs. Speaking of which, why on earth does eBay allow sellers to receive negative feedback over shipping costs? If a buyer wants to complain about shipping (and handling) costs they could have just not bid in the first place. Then again, that might be too logical.
