Whether the National Hockey League needed a new team of not will depend upon each individual fan, and perhaps what city they are from or living in. The Seattle Kraken team has debuted in the 2021-22 NHL season and fans are buying up certain collectibles to commemorate the inaugural game and season. Time will tell if these hold much value or not to a broad group of collectors. Sports fans in the Seattle region may also hold this team’s collectibles in a higher light than fans who have had home NHL teams for decades.

Collectors Dashboard evaluates high-end collectibles as an alternative asset class. That means the same money that would have previously been invested in stocks and bonds is ending up in sports collectibles and other collectibles. World Series tickets have been sought after and can be quite valuable, but, again, the value of Seattle Kraken collectibles in the future remains in the “wait and see” category.

We have looked into ticket stub and warm-up hockey pucks that have come up for sale on eBay. This needs a reminder that the inaugural game between the Las Vegas Golden Knights versus the Seattle Kraken took place on October 12, 2021. In short, there have only been two weeks or so to track memorabilia sales. That is just not enough time to evaluate whether or not there is a thriving market or not.

Major auction houses have not yet listed many items from the Kraken, but eBay has seen lots of items sell. Because jerseys and hockey sticks may be commemorative, we have excluded those from any review.

Another issue for memorabilia’s collectability and whether it is worthy of investment is that it is still way too soon to have graded items on the market. There may have been some spot grading and/or authentication of certain items, but it’s too soon to expect any memorabilia to have been sent in and graded and then resent to dealers and collectors through traditional grading channels.

Admittedly this is a very brief review. Again, there have barely been two weeks since the inaugural game. It is appropriate to hold off on any judgment this soon into the season. As many sports teams find out over time — not every team thrives. And every year, only team is the absolute winner. And many teams remain in the doghouse for fans year after year.
