New Record Honus Wagner Price for PSA 1.5 Grade (North of $3 Million!)

Records are made to be broken. Despite some wide softness in the sports card market, don’t tell that to buyers of extremely rare vintage cards. And don’t dare tell it to buyers of the prized multi-million dollar T206 Honus Wagner card.

An auction from Goldin Auctions fetched a whopping $3.72 million for a PSA 1.5 grade of the T206 Honus Wagner. What is particularly amazing about the PSA certification #57761781 is that this exact example of the T206 Wagner sold for $2.28 million in a May 2021 sale via Heritage Auctions.

The auction ended Sunday night after 27 bids. Another feat for this Wagner sale is that this was a tad higher than a $3.66 million sale from Goldin in a May 2021 sale for a PSA 2 example.

A PSA 1.5 grade is not all that gentle on the eyes, and the T206 Wagner card has a hard wrinkle right down the front of the card that even created slight paper loss in the background, Wagner’s hair and face, and even down his uniform.

This particular T206 Wagner was also marred on the back with 4 dark stains likely from the card being put into a scrapbook decades ago.

Despite the mysteries and debates over the famous T206 Honus Wagner, the T206 is not the only Honus Wagner tobacco cardand it isn’t even the rarest of that scarce Tobacco Wagner classification either! Images below by Goldin Auctions.

Collectors Dashboard evaluates high-end collectibles as an alternative asset class. Any Honus Wagner card from his playing days falls into that classification. That does not mean that the assets cannot fall in value. Many prized modern and vintage card prices have dropped in recent months, but don’t bother telling that to buyers of the T206 Wagner card.
