New World Record Sale for a Sports Ticket

There appears to be a new world record sale for a sports ticket. A 1934 Golf Masters ticket with 17 of the players who competed in that tournament have signed the ticket, which also happens to be from the very first Masters. This ticket in particular was sold privately for $600,000.00 by Golden Age Golf Auctions.

The ticket is autographed by 17 of the 61 participants in the inaugural Masters tournament, which was then called the Augusta National Invitational Tournament. The ticket is autographed by winner Horton Smith and greats Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen, as well as famous sports writer Grantland Rice.

Collectors Dashboard evaluates collectibles as an alternative asset class. The same capital that could have been invested into stocks or bonds is being used to buy high-end collectibles. True sports collectors and hobbyists have a passion to own the highest priced sporting ticket for quite a long time. The investor class in collectibles is solely buying an asset to sell at a later date for a profit. This keeps collectors and investors in a constant battle for who can win in auctions.

Ryan Carey of Golden Age Golf Auctions has confirmed the details of the sale. The $600,000 sales price has been reported as the highest known price ever paid for a ticket in any sport ever. The prior record was a recent Jackie Robinson debut ticket which sold for $480,000.00.

Ticket collecting has become much more popular in recent months. Unlike many modern sports cards and some other collectibles, there is generally a finite known total of possible examples, and there is a much smaller graded population.

Golden Age Golf Auctions has its Spring Auction that has already begun. This auction has many other signed items from the Masters tournament and other tournaments but lot #6 stands out. This is a Tiger Woods signed ticket from his 1992 PGA debut at the Los Angeles Open at the Riviera Country Club and it was signed when he was just 16 years old.
