Off the Charts Auction & Buy It Now Data on Joe Burrow Card Sales

It is no secret that Joe Burrow’s rookie cards and limited edition cards have been selling like crazy. Collectors Dashboard has tracked countless sales, but even the amount of $10,000 and much higher sales on eBay has been approaching the astonishing level. Tracking actual sales of Joe Burrow cards can be very difficult because of the Buy It Now (or Best Offers) showing up in completed transactions on top of “sold” items on eBay. That said, we have tried to run multiple screens for the sold items without the completed listings.

The end result from scanning eBay data is simple and complex at the same time — The auction and “Buy It Now” Data on Joe Burrow card is off the charts!

We also removed any items in trading cards that were under $20.00 in an effort to eliminate the various packs of cards that might not have Joe Burrow cards in them but may have Joe Burrow as a potential pull listed somewhere in the description. Admittedly that does not eliminate all of the packs, boxes and lots which may or may not have Joe Burrow cards in them.

The cut-off date was the start of January 29, 2022 to match the hype ahead of and then after the Championship game.

This allowed for 84 pages at 120 items per page up to January 30, 2022 before the eBay message says “We’re unable to show you more than 10,000 results. Please refine your search to narrow your results.”

Maximum eBay results

If we then expand the price up to $100.00 as a floor. This got us past 28 pages (again with 120 listings per page) plus 11 more results. That’s a total of 3,371 items with a floor of $100.00 matching the Joe Burrow card search. Admittedly, this screen still includes some of the other players or items which may or may not actually contain Joe Burrow cards.

At the $500.00 floor, the results are still mind-numbing. That figure back to the start of January 29, 2022 is still approximately 510 cards.

Many of Joe Burrow’s cards, even at the highest caliber of cards, are still not yet graded. He was a rookie and then a second year player during the pandemic and that means many of his cards just simply haven’t been submitted yet. But here are the eBay screens using only PSA graded, SGC graded and Beckett graded examples with no price limits:

  • PSA graded was 1,570 examples
  • BGS was approximately 170 graded examples
  • SGC was approximately 140 graded examples

In an expanded search conducted using a modified $10,000 floor going back to after Christmas Day on 2021, without respect to any gradings or other parameters, that was still 42 listings that sold in auction format only. That did not include Buy It Now or Best Offer listings and was as of Feb. 10, 2022. That is using eBay data rather and does not include private auction houses where higher sales prices are routinely seen.

Another issue to consider is that some of the auctions have likely seen the same card flipped multiple times depending on the time frame. It is not unusual to see buying frenzies and flips and re-flips in hot sports cards around key events like the Super Bowl. But this is something else entirely.

While the data less recent, this still leaves the opportunity that collectors should have maybe considered buying the less graded and less popular Matthew Stafford since the L.A. Rams were favored to win.

There is one thing that the collectors in the hobby should be braced for — an exponential explosion in the coming months of graded Joe Burrow cards. That’s just the deal.

And to think that many collectors have said they are changing how they buy sports cards after the frenzy and tank that was seen in modern era cards in 2021.
