Topps New 2022 Baseball Set 1987 Redux: Ohtani Leads & Rookies Wander Franco, Jarren Duran & Luis Gil

The Topps Company, now part of Fanatics Collectibles, has announced the launch of its 2022 Series 1 Collection to welcome back the yet another baseball card season. This new set of 330 cards will be available starting on February 16, 2022 and will feature a brand-new bordered base card design.

Topps is basing the 1987 woodgrain design of the cards in the 2022 Topps Series 1 Baseball featuring current stars, as well in legends of the game.

It is probably unsurprising that Topps is featuring AL MVP Shohei Ohtani as this year’s cover athlete. The Topps press release indicated that fans voted Ohtani as card number one in the checklist. Ohtani will be shown pitching and hitting on the box and on the pack wraps.

Along with modern day stars, the 2022 Series 1 Collection will also include rookies who debuted during the 2021 season. The collection will also feature the 2021 league leaders and team cards.

Topps did specify that Wander Franco, Jarren Duran and Luis Gil will all receive their first rookie cards. The press release also noted that collectors can look for autographs and game-used memorabilia cards featuring Mike Trout, Aaron Judge, Fernando Tatis Jr., and others.

There will also be base card parallels sequentially numbered from 2022 all the way to unique 1/1 cards. Those will include insert sets including Generation NOW, Diamond Greats Die Cuts and Flashiest Fleet.

The cards will be available at the Topps.com website, as well as in local hobby shops and retailers starting on February 16, 2022. Topps will also host its first-ever Series 1 Premiere Party on February 15 in Los Angeles to give guests an exclusive look at this year’s collection.
