Want to Own James Dean’s Deadly Porsche 550 Spyder?

There are many unsolved mysteries around the fate of celebrities and the things they owned. One that has remained rather elusive was the fate of what happened to actor James Dean’s Porsche 55 Spyder that the actor died in. There have been multiple reports about the vehicle’s fate itself, but one interesting twist is that part of this notorious car can now be purchased in an auction.

The original and complete transaxle assembly of Dean’s Porsche 550, a major component of the car, is being offered in an auction. It is the first time that a confirmed part of Dean’s deadly car has even been offered up for sale.

The Bring A Trailer auction service is auctioning the 4-speed manual transaxle from that same 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder. The transaxle had been separated from the car at an unknown point in the history. According top the auction and according to reports since its discovery, the transaxle had been stored for over 30 years before the owner bought it.

While this is far from a complete 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder, and certainly will not be counted as “James Dean’s entire car, this is the most that has been available. A Porsche collector from the East Coast unveiled the rediscovered transaxle late in 2020. Many Porsche enthusiasts consider Dean’s Porsche the most famous of its type. The transaxle is stamped with factory serial number #10046 — a match for the chassis and for the engine numbers.

The transaxle has now been fitted to a steel display stand with axles, axle tubes, drum brake assemblies, and a starter and the current owner is also including a copy of the letter from Porsche to verify its origin and a documentation file.

It is unknown what the transaxle will fetch at the end of the auction, but it already had 15 bids and was at $100,000 as of May 18, 2021 and the auction is not set to end until Saturday, May 29, 2021. At the time this was sent for publishing it had received 36,535 views and had 1,792 watchers for the auction.
