Will Patrick Mahomes Out-GOAT Tom Brady in Playoff Stats?

The hobby is undeniably obsessed with owning Tom Brady collectibles. The 44 year-old quarterback has broken just about every major record that could be broken. Despite a major comeback, Brady and the Buccaneers lost against the Rams and they are out of the Super Bowl hunt. Patrick Mahomes is now the strongest candidate of the current players for which quarterback will be the next GOAT.

Patrick Mahomes signed the largest contract in U.S. sports history. The average annual value of $45 million was a $503 million deal for 10 years. Barring any injuries or other issues, this contract has Mahomes in place to lead the Chiefs into the next decade, and until he is 36 years old.

The sports collectibles hobby is paying close attention to current statistics. After all, the hobby’s biggest sales in 2021 were dominated by Tom Brady and a nearly unbelievable price for a Mahomes card.

ANY GIVEN SUNDAY(s)

Sunday’s drive at the end of the game was led by Mahomes and his team taking the ball close enough to kick the game-tying field goal. Mahomes overtime passing was equally flawless, but after going 6-for-6 rather than 2-for-2 passing, and it came with a game-winning touchdown for Mahomes. Now the Chiefs are just one game away from the Super Bowl.

Mahomes managed to pass for 378 yards in this last game, he tallied up 3 touchdowns, and he also rushed for 69 yards and another TD. Now let’s think about Brady’s last game, even with a loss. Brady threw for 329 yards, and he had 1 TD and 1 interception. He was also sacked 3 times. Still, Brady has been privileged to have 10 Super Bowl appearances in his career, with 7 victories.

Patrick Mahomes is racking up statistics that are mind-blowing considering he is 26 years old and has only played in 5 seasons with the NFL. Next Sunday will mark his fourth consecutive AFC Championship. If the Chiefs win, this would be the team’s third straight.

The outcome of the championship game is far from over, but it is very conceivable that Mahomes could eventually challenge Tom Brady’s record as the best post-season quarterback of all-time. Mahomes now has the most pass touchdowns through 10 career playoff starts at 25 TDs. If the Chiefs win next Sunday’s game, Mahomes would be the proud owner of 2 Super Bowl rings at just 26 yeas of age. For a reference, Brady also won his second ring at the same age.

VERSUS FORMER GOATs

Here is the list of the rest of NFL history for Super Bowl victories after Brady’s 7 wins:

  • 4 wins – Joe Montana & Terry Bradshaw
  • 3 wins – Troy Aikman
  • 2 Wins – Eli Manning, Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, John Elway, Jim Plunkett, Bob Griese, Roger Staubach & Bart Starr

IN THE END…

Predicting how a football career pans out has too many variables, and expecting every quarterback to play deep into their forties is not exactly normal. The average NFL career is approximately 3.3 years, but the average quarterback career is about 4.4 years.

Tom Brady’s stats during regular season and post-season speak for themselves. If anyone does ever break his records it’s going to take at least another decade for those to pan out. For now the GOAT chasers are all lined up behind Patrich Mahomes.
