Boba Fett Collectibles Surging Into Disney+ Series Release

Disney+ is set to launch its original series Star Wars: The Book Of Boba Fett on December 29. With the news of the series the Boba Fett action figures, which Collectors Dashboard has written about, looked more perky in their mint condition packaging. It was obvious that there would be a boost in interest to all (or most) things Boba Fett from this new release.

The prototype Boba Fett action figures have been big news in 2021 as they break their own records. What is also making news is the collaboration of a street artist known as KAWS and Lucasfilm for a popular vinyl statue. Heritage Auctions as well as eBay have produced insight into the Boba Fett fever that has taken over both the Star Wars and collectibles universe.

The Kenner prototype of Boba Fett’s 1979 action figure did break its own record back in a July 2021 Hake’s Auction sale (Image below by Hake’s Auctions) selling for $165,200.00. The auction record it broke was $112,926.00 earlier in 2021 as reported by Collectors Dashboard.

Collectors Dashboard evaluates high-end collectibles as an alternative asset class. This means collectibles are attracting the same capital that could have been invested into stocks or bonds. Many collectibles now cost thousands of dollars (or much more). Collectors with a passion to own a collectible Boba Fett for years frequently have to compete directly against investors whose only desire is to make a profit in the future.

According to Disney+:

“The Book of Boba Fett,” a thrilling Star Wars adventure teased in a surprise end-credit sequence following the Season 2 finale of “The Mandalorian,” finds legendary bounty hunter Boba Fett and mercenary Fennec Shand navigating the galaxy’s underworld when they return to the sands of Tatooine to stake their claim on the territory once ruled by Jabba the Hutt and his crime syndicate.”

KAWS X is a new name to associate with Boba Fett. If you have never heard of this artist here is a description from Heritage Auctions:

“KAWS is one of the premier urban artists working today, his pieces reflect that in their worth. KAWS has sold many paintings for millions of dollars. On the low end, some of his vinyl figures can be had for a thousand dollars or less. The most ever paid for a KAWS painting was for the acrylic on canvas piece, The KAWS Album (2005), which sold for $14,855,240 on April 1st, 2019. It is a prototypical work from the artist, a KAWS/Simpsons/Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band mashup that exhibits KAWS’ predilection for mish-mashing cultural references together.”

Boba Fett KAWS

KAWS X Lucasfilm is a collaboration of Kaws and Lucasfilm which owns the rights to Boba Fett (Image Above by Heritage Auctions). Here are the recent sales by Heritage Auctions of these painted cast vinyl statues that depict the classic Boba Fett body with a KAWS interpreted head featuring exaggerated ears and his trademark Xs over the eyes:

  • KAWS X Lucasfilm Boba Fett, 2013 painted cast vinyl sold for $20,000.00 on December 1, 2021 after 15 bids.
  • KAWS X Lucasfilm Boba Fett, 2013 painted cast vinyl sold for $13,750.00 on November 9, 2021 after 17 bids.
  • KAWS X Lucasfilm Boba Fett, 2013 painted cast vinyl sold for $9,687.50 on both February 24, 2021 and June 24, 2020 for 10 bids and then 18 bids.

Here are the eBay sales of recent:

  • Boba Fett 1979 Kenner Action Figure in original packaging sold for $6,717.00 on December 14, 2021 after 34 bids.
  • Mythos Boba Fett #239 1/5 scale polystone statue sold for $1,275.00 on December 5, 2021 after 21 bids.
  • Boba Fett 1979 Kenner Action Figure in original mailed packaging sold for $787.77 on November 28, 2021 after 33 bids.
  • Boba Fett 1979 Kenner 12-inch Action Figure sold for $711.00 on October 21, 2021 after 29 bids.
  • Boba Fett ROTJ Special Edition Helmet sold for $500.00 on December 12, 2021 after 3 bids.

On a side note, it’s too bad those 1980 Topps cards from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back had to be so ugly. Imagien hwo well a “Rookie Boba Fett” graded PSA 10 or SGC 9.5 would do right around now. Then again, eBay does show a $1,900 sale on December 18, 2021 after 54 bids for a “Topps Star Wars Masterwork Mandalorian, Boba Fett, Sketch Card AP Chris Meeks 1/1” and that card is attractive. eBay also sold a PSA 10 of the Topps Star Wars Living Set (#83) Boba Fett in an auction for $736.78 after 22 bids.

Collectors Dashboard looks forward to a warm scene by a Christmas fire watching a bounty hunter pour new interest into an old villain (or is he just a neutral bounty hunter?). Boba Fett captured Han Solo in The Empire Strikes back but his character is about to get much deeper. It would be easy to speculate all sorts of twists ahead of the release and it’s probably a safe bet that some of the other original Star Wars characters may appear in digital or live appearances.

One thing is for certain and that is that Boba Fett has made money for collectors in 2021.
