With 2021 winding down, it’s time to evaluate some of the items that have sold and also to look forward in 2022 to see what trophy coins are already scheduled for auction next year. This is about the first key coin auction of 2022. There are many trophy coins that are going to be up for grabs.

The Heritage Auctions Platinum Night Sale is the first major opportunity of 2022 for investors to pursue Trophy Coins. The January 10, 2022 NYINC World Coins Platinum Night Auction New York is a night filled with Trophy Coins that we will highlight. These are coins that attract collectors whose desire is to own the finest example coin that is known.

When the highest graded examples bring in record prices, it tends to raise the value of all the coins of the same type below it. The competition of owning the rarest example has opened the door to new collectors coming into numismatics. In this auction are very small populations of several coins that we will feature and track the realized prices of.

According to Heritage Auctions there are only 7 examples graded by PCGS and 6 examples graded by NGC. The sole finest example of this British coin was graded NGC PR66 Ultra Cameo and sold through Heritage Auctions for $1,440,000.00 on August 19, 2021.

Charles III 8 Reales 1786 Mo-FM AU58 NGC “presumed unique” with an estimate of $150,000.00 to $200,000.00. The only known example of this coin from Venezuela its population stands at 1 of 1 with a reserve amount of $150,000.00.

Amadeo I gold Specimen 100 Pesetas 1871(71) SD-M SP63 PCGS with an estimate of $150,000.00 to $200,000.00. This coin from Spain (Image Above) is the finest certified Amadeo I 100 Pesetas and an ex Numismatica Espanola Cover Coin.

George IV gold Proof 5 Pounds 1826 PR63 Ultra Cameo NGC (Image Above) with an estimate of $100,000.00 to $120,000.00.

Here are coins that are featured in this auction that are by definition a trophy because of the low population but still attainable to the average collector:

Republic gold 10 Dukatu 1935 MS63 NGC with an estimate of $8,000.00 to $12,000.00. The NGC population of this grade is 5 and none have been graded in this grade by PCGS.

William IV gold Mohur 1835 -(c) MS61 NGC with an estimate of $20,000.00 to $30,000.00. The NGC population of this grade is 7 and none have been graded in this grade by PCGS.

Philip V 8 Reales 1732 Mo-F AU53 NGC with an estimate of $30,000.00 $50,000.00. The NGC population for this grade is 2 and none have been graded in this grade by PCGS.

Ptolemy II Philadelphus (285/4-246 BC), with Arsinöe II, Ptolemy I, and Berenice I. AV mnaieion or octodrachm (27mm, 27.67 gm, 1h). NGC Choice XF with an estimate of $12,500.00 to $15,000.00. Only 13 have been graded in this condition by NGC. No population information was found from PCGS.

Alexander III the Great (336-323 BC), AV distater (22mm, 17.16 gm, 10h) NGC Choice AU with an estimate of $40,000.00 to $60,000.00. The total NGC population in this grade is 8. No population information was found from PCGS.
