The 2022 Topps Series 1 release has come out, and you know what it’s really all about — Wander Franco! The trading card community hasn’t been able to post enough about Wander Franco cards on Twitter and other platforms and his card sales have been through the roof. The reality is that there is absolutely no way to know how many Topps Series 1 cards have actually been opened now how many are being submitted into the grading systems at PSA, SGC, BGS, and others.

Collectors Dashboard wanted to put together some basic statistics about what has been sold on eBay and what has been shown elsewhere. The list includes data from PSA, eBay, Goldin, PWCC, Heritage, COMC, Alt, Fanatics and others. The idea here is to capture the first 72-hour period or thereabouts.

The data here were collected over a two-hour period on the morning of Feb. 19, 2022 and ending at 12:25 PM Eastern Time on the same day. Franco’s player stats have been provided at the end.

THE FIRST PSA 10 TOPPS 2022 SERIES 1 CARD? 

One PSA 10 of the 2022 Topps Series 1 Wander Franco #215 PSA 10 is now counted as the “First Ever Graded!” example. Update 2:20 PM EST, $730.00 after 12 bids and 127 watchers. At 12:30 It had 92 watchers and 7 bids with a $610.00 current price and 2 days and 6 hours to end. That card was given a PSA certification number of 63686766 and that means that we are nearing 64 million total PSA certification numbers in all-time stats. A look at the PSA certification verification site confirmed the data presented.

MAJOR EBAY DATA (72 Hours & Present)

Using a $25.00 price minimum for “2022 Wander Franco” generated 318 sales results on eBay’s auction formats with a minimum floor of $25.00 and 4 of those lot sales were labeled by the seller as “investor” lots (Are they offering investment advice by saying that?). After removing the $25.00 floor, there were 591 results for “2022 Wander Franco” in eBay auction format (Image below by Topps poster offering).

Where the wild west starts to happen is in the “Buy It Now” format sales on eBay. This does include many “Or Best Offer” sales in the mix, and that means that knowing the exact prices they sold for are simply not known. Still, many sales were under $20.00 and we tracked roughly 1600 sales going back to the first “in hand” card on February 15, 2022 as of 11:30 a.m. Eastern Time on February 19, 2022.

There were three fresh 2022 Sales at the highest prices in the Refractors limited to /99 SSP:

• On February 17, a 2022 Topps Series 1 Wander Franco Silver Pack Green Refractor 66/99 SSP Rookie card sold for $2,125.00 after 35 bids (+$27.20 shipping).
• On February 18, 2022 a Topps Series 1 Wander Franco Silver Pack Green Refractor 17/99 SSP Rookie Card sold for $2,035.51 after 46 bids (free shipping).
• On February 18, 2022 a 2022 Topps Series 1 Wander Franco Silver Pack Green Refractor 92/99 SSP Rookie Card sold for $1,846.55 after 45 bids (free shipping).

And two more similar looking refractor card sales:

• The highest Blue Refractor (/150) sale was a Wander Franco rookie 2022 Topps Series 1 Silver Pack 1987 MOJO Blue Refractor (#1/150) that sold for $1,552.00 60 after bids on February 17.
• A 2022 Topps Series 1 Wander Franco rookie Silver Pack Chrome Autograph (#175/199) sold for $1,324.00 after 39 bids. That sale February 18.

While there are many Buy It Now (or Best Offer) prices of $10,000 and higher, the highest current price in an eBay auction format was for 2022 Topps Wander Franco 1987 GOLD auto /50 rookie redemption rays SSP 87BA-WF with a high bid of $3,100.00. There were 56 bids already with 10 hours and 40 minutes left. Here are two more:

• Another item which still had active bids was 2022 Topps Chrome Wander Franco Rookie Card Orange Autograph /25 with a bid of $2,000.00. This item had 14 bids with 1 day 8 hours left to bid.
• A 2022 Topps Wander Franco Auto Postseason Game Used Relic Red #12/25 was last seen having a $1,975.00 bid price after 39 bids with 3 days and 9 hours remaining.

eBay’s active listings counted 1,800+ results for current “Wander Franco 2022 Topps Series 1” ranked by “ending soonest.” The highest single price with more than 1 bid on an active listing was a 2022 TOPPS SERIES 1 WANDER FRANCO SSP PHOTO LEGEND #561 TAMPA BAY RAYS #215 with 2 days and 4 hours left to go. It was at $1,825.00 after 21 bids with free shipping. Here are how many parallels and variations eBay also had listed:

HERITAGE, GOLDIN, PWCC DATA

The traditional auction houses outside of eBay have scheduled auctions. That means the data used for these notes is not means to represent only the last 72(ish) hours of sales data. It also may not reflect some of the negotiated sales that can happen on those platforms.

HERITAGE — Heritage Auctions has not had any Wander Franco card sales since Feb. 13, 2022. That last sale was a 2019 Bowman Prospects Wander Franco PSA #BP-100 PSA Gem Mint 10 that went for $174.00. Here are the three highest individual card prices ever sold by Heritage for all Wander Franco cards:

GOLDIN — Looking at Goldin.co we have found the highest sale to date from the Goldin Elite Auction Ending May 22-23. This was lot #452 for a 2019 Bowman Chrome Prospect Autographs Red Refractor #WF Wander Franco Signed Rookie Card (#3/5) graded PSA GEM MT 10. This sale was listed as $193,200.00 after 25 bids (image below at Goldin.co). We have not confirmed these sales with Goldin.co as of this time.

PWCC — PWCC Marketplace lists 712 “sold results” and the most recent sale was a 2020 Bowman Chrome Refractor Wander Franco ROOKIE /499 #BCP163 PSA 9 MINT (PSA Population 1 of 8 and Just Three Graded Higher) which sold for $115.20 on Feb. 13, 2022. Two additional Wander Franco card sales from the same Feb. 13, 2022 date were as follows:

• 2020 Bowman Chrome Green Shimmer Wander Franco ROOKIE /99 #BCP163 PSA 9 MINT that sold for $144
• 2020 Bowman Chrome Prospects Wander Franco ROOKIE #BCP163 PSA 10 GEM MINT that sold for $64.80

Going further down the list in sales prices, PWCC Marketplace also had individual 27 graded serial-numbered cards (non-case sales and non-bulk sales) as high as $5,988.00 down to $3,000.00.

COMC, STARSTOCK & ALT

The COMC.com site has a high price of $2,781.10 as of last look, and of the 466 listings available many of the Wander Franco offerings from current and prior years are under $10.00 per card.  Many of those listings also have multiple cards available. COMC’s “lots sold out” of course goes back further than just this week but that included 534 lots. Of those, 387 were ungraded and 142 were graded.

The StarStock.com site lists that there are currently 652 cards “in vault” and 191 cards for sale. It also already counts 83 different card types.

Looking at the ALT platform there were just 16 assets listed but none were of the 2022 releases from this week. The price/ask was as high as $8,400 for a SGC graded 2020 Bowman Sapphire Chrome Prospect Wander Franco #BCP1 — with a “last sold price” on eBay of only $50.00 from January 31, 2022. The lowest ask was $68.00 for a PSA 9 graded example of a 2019 Bowman Prospect Chrome Wander Franco #100.

WANDER FRANCO PLAYER STATS 

According to the back of the 2022 Topps card, Franco played in 70 games in 2021. With 281 at-bats he was credited with 53 runs, 81 hits, 7 homers and 39 RBI. His .288 batting average was accompanied by 2 stolen bases and had a .463 slugging percentage. He also had 24 walks and struck out 37 times. Wander Franco finished third in the AL Rookie of the Year voting.

The data look the same at the Baseball-Reference.com website and that site even gives some 2022 projections. As a reminder, there is no way to know if any of those projections (Marcel) will be accurate. The 5′-10″ 189-pound Dominican Republic player is still just 21. Here are those projections: 354 appearances, 319 at-bats, 55 runs, 89 hits, 10 homers 45 RBI. His batting average is predicted to be .279 with a .458 sugging percentage.

Just don’t forget that there are still many concerns out there about the 2022 MLB season, and don’t forget that not all young hot prospects pan out the way the hobby hopes and bets. And most importantly, do not forget that about 95% to 98% of all cards opened in packs will have little or no value in a few years.
