Are Fake Pokemon Cards All That New?

Logan Paul made some serious news in 2021 after going into an extreme Pokemon acquisition — spending $3.5 million to purchase a sealed box of first-edition base set Pokemon cards is pretty serious. There were online doubts almost immediately that brought the box of cards into question. Oh no, could it be?

Now a video from Logan Paul himself has proved that the suspicious case of first-edition Pokemon cards is indeed a fake. And on top of the Pokemon card boxes not being legitimate, the first box opened contained G.I. Joe cards in the pack.

If anything sums this up right it’s Logan Paul’s end of video statement:

“We Got F’d!… End of Story!”

Where this story becomes more of a broad issue than just one famous person being duped out of $3.5 million is that the head of Baseball Card Exchange (BBCE) in authentication examined how and why this case was legitimate. In effect, BBCE was recertifying its authentication live on camera and outlined the tape used to seal the box and the stamp from Wizards of the Coast. Does this comment help matters?

“We all got duped… Agreed?”

Below is a copy of the Tweets sent out by BaseballCardExchange from its @BBCExchange account:

BBCE fake Pokemon

The biggest challenge ahead for the collecting community, far beyond just Pokemon, is that BBCE hasn’t just said that it is halting the review of Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh cases — “We are re-evaluating our approach to all sealed cases going forward” is what should stand out the most.

Have you recently paid a boatload for a case of cards that has been authenticated by BBCE? If so, there are now some questions that are going to need to be addressed. As the rise of The Hobby has more and more money, there is a higher temptation for fraudsters to come in trying to dupe buyers. In this case, no pun intended, the dupe was on the entire process — at least two well-known buyers and the authentication service.

Collectors have seen fake Pokemon cards before. Fake Pokemon cases is something may bring ripples all the way down the chain.
