Early U.S. Proof Coins Auction Worth Paying Attention To

Bidding has opened up for Heritage Auctions October 4th (2021) Toro Collection. The U.S. coins showcase has many seldom seen examples of early types of U.S. coinage. This collection’s focus is on coins that are rare types versus coins with only one or two existing examples.

Collectors Dashboard wanted to analyze the stars of the show and what they are estimated to go for during the month of bidding.

Collectors Dashboard evaluates collectibles as an alternative asset class. This means that high-priced collectibles are attracting the same capital that could have been invested into stocks or bonds. Many collectibles now cost thousands of dollars (or much more). Collectors with a passion to own a collectible for years frequently have to compete directly against investors whose only desire is to make a profit in the future.

The Toro Collection was assembled all by one collector who, according to Heritage Auctions, devoted 30% of the collection to early proof coins. Pre-1936 proof varieties is something Collectors Dashboard has written about before, and here’s an opportunity to bid on some.

Among the many proof type Indian Head cents are scarce examples from the 1860s.

The 1867 1C PR63 Red and Brown PCGS has a mintage of just 625. The coin dealer newsletter or CDN estimate of $400.00 for the coin which it has already passed with 13 bids equaling $482.40 with buyers premium added.

The 1858-O double eagle in PCGS XF45 is a rarity because of its New Orleans mint mark. The population according to Heritage Auctions is estimated between 225-275 making it something many collectors will be eyeing for their gold double eagle collections. Filling the date is a challenge and collectors will be reacting to this instead of the condition of the coin. The current bid is for $2,100.00 which has not met the reserve on a coin with a coin dealer newsletter estimate of $11,000.00. The PCGS price guide estimates a VF example today to sell for $15,000.00.

There are three total $20 dollar gold pieces in this auction and the 1862 with VF details certified by PCGS has the most activity standing at 12 bids equaling $5,160.00 including buyers premium. The coin shows signs of cleaning according to the PCGS holder it’s encapsulated in. Heritage Auctions had a previous auction of a VF35 example that sold for $11,400.00 in April 2020.

The 1870-CC $1 CC stands for Carson City minted and the coin is in a circulated condition of Fine 12. The current bid is for $1,500.00 including buyers premium. The coin’s coin dealer newsletter estimate is for $1,450.00. The coin has eye appeal and it’s a hard concept to imagine that no one else will bid on it until the auction closes on October 4th.

Low populations and scarce example dates of coins are the theme with Heritage Auctions Toro collection. Something for every coin collector is listed and many visually unique types are available to be seen. Collectors Dashboard likes to remind collectors that many of these coins have been held onto as an investment for many years, and the collectors or investors who win them in this auction stand to do similarly.
