Sotheby’s has just secured a large whisky auction and the results are in. The auction was titled: Distilled | Whisky + Moutai + More. The auction is in Hong Kong but the high-end whisky in it is world renowned. Collectors Dashboard has profiled the competition to own certain bottles of rare whisky and this auction has some of the rarest. Included in the auction is a 57 Year Old Macallan. The auction closed February 23 at 12:00 HKT here are some of the bottles and standing bids we think you should know.

Collectors Dashboard evaluates high-end collectibles as an alternative asset class. This means collectibles are attracting the same capital that could have been invested into stocks or bonds. Many collectibles now cost thousands of dollars (or much more). Collectors with a passion to own a collectible for years frequently have to compete directly against investors whose only desire is to make a profit in the future.

There may seem to be some mixed numbers on first look, but then again if you could order a glass of some of these high-end whisky lots at a steakhouse it might cost $5,000 (USD) or more for just a finger. The auction’s total raise of more than 6.81 Hong Kong Dollars translated to $873,882.19 in US Dollars using the basic currency converters. Image below from Sotheby’s.

These top whisky lots were broken down to show the top lot prices but there were 87 lots in total.

Lot 5002: The Macallan 57 Year Old in Lalique, 6 Pillars, Third Edition, 48.5 abv NV (1 BT70) has an estimate of $650,000.00 to $950,000.00 HKD which is $83,314.33 USD to $121,767.11 USD and a current bid of $650,000.00 HKD is $83,314.33 USD with 2 bids. UPDATE: CLOSED FOR 875,000 HKD ($112,087.50 USD)

Lot 5003: The Macallan The Red Collection 78 Year Old 42.2 abv NV (1 BT70) has an estimate of $650,000.00 to $900,000.00 HKD which is $83,314.33 USD to $115,358.31 USD and a current bid of $700,000 HKD is $89,723.13 USD with 2 bids. UPDATE: CLOSED FOR 875,000 HKD ($112,087.50 USD)

Lot 5001: The Macallan 62 Year Old in Lalique, 6 Pillars, Fifth Edition, 53.1 abv NV (1 BT70) has an estimate of $650,000.00 to $950,000.00 HKD which is $83,314.33 USD to $121,767.11 USD and a current bid of $500,000.00 HKD which is $64,087.95 USD with 1 bid. UPDATE… CLOSED FOR 625,000 HKD ($80,062.50 USD)

The bids may not have been blown out here, but these three highest priced whiskies in the auction are definitely above and beyond what normal whisky buyers and aficionados can purchase. Just seeing a bottle of Macallen 57 Year Old is a new experience for many whisky collectors.

And for prices realized some of the other lots that weren’t as high did manage to blow out estimates.
