The sports collectibles industry has seen a lot of changes from 2020 into 2021. One player that has been in constant demand is Michael Jordan. His rookie card prices and key card price skyrocketed from 2020 into 2021. But for volatility in stock market terms, they came crashing down just if the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 20,000 points in a short period of time. After scouring a mountain of data from the summer of 2021 auctions on eBay, Michael Jordan rookie card prices above $10,000 would seem to indicate that Jordan’s rookie card prices finally reached their bottom.

Collectors Dashboard evaluates high-end collectibles as an alternative asset class. That does not mean we pick card price tops nor do we pick card price bottoms. That is up to the market and up to individual sales. With a $10,000 threshold, this is enough capital that it could have been invested into stocks or bonds. Instead, it is being invested into high-end collectibles like Michael Jordan variations.

It is undeniable that collectors with a passion to own these cards are competing directly with investors who are simply buying assets to sell for a profit. First and foremost, collectors and investors alike better understand and accept that there are no guaranteed profits in life. Stocks and bonds can fall in value.

Sports collectibles can also fall in value. Those prices did fall handily in the first half of 2021. And when you add up the cumulative costs of commissions (or fees), shipping and taxes, the costs for break-even in collectibles are automatically higher than investing in traditional assets.

This is a review of the eBay auctions with multiple bidders with sale prices above $10,000 from June through August in 2021. The criteria here was Michael Jordan cards, and not just his rookie cards.

We used the $10,000 threshold because that includes the equivalent of his PSA 8 rookie card variation of the beautiful red 1986 Fleer card #57. These basketball cards were counted only within the “sold” status (not completed) and with multiple bids (1 bid excluded) on individual cards. We noted the exceptions or additions separately and we also included the lots and/or sets with Michael Jordan in the mix.

As the 1986 Fleer #57 is the bogey for Michael Jordan rookie cards, these $10,000+ sales were noted individually. We then broke out the 1986 Fleer Sticker variation, and we then listed the second year 1987 Fleer #59 Michael Jordan card as it is a frequently traded card. After that came “any Michael Jordan card and every Michael Jordan card” that sold above $10,000. All prices are in descending order so you can track what each price point generated in the summer of 2021.

Please note that the basic search functionality was used within eBay’s sold items in auction format, and Buy It Now was eliminated. That means many transactions may have not been captured, but we wanted to see what the items were doing on a competitive basis within eBay. No considerations were given to sales taxes, shipping costs, insurance and international orders.

After you review the prices from this summer, you might wonder if eBay should offer Michael Jordan an advisory role. There are just that many $10,000 sales and higher.

What is hard to imagine here is that there are many other auction houses which also offer out Michael Jordan cards.
